The Future of the Hospital Emergency Department

Leon Haley Jr., MD, MHSA, FACEP is currently the Deputy Chief of Staff and Deputy Senior Vice-President of Medical Affairs for the Grady Health System. Dr. Haley holds the additional titles of Chief of Service, Emergency Medicine for the Grady Health System; Medical Director of the Emergency Care Center at Grady Memorial Hospital; Vice-Chairman, Clinical Affairs, Grady Health System; and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Emory University and The Emory Clinic. The Grady Health System is one of the largest Public Hospital Systems in the country and is the home of the largest emergency department in the Southeast. It serves as Metro Atlanta’s and North Georgia’s only Level I Trauma Center, the region’s only Burn Unit and the regional Level III Neonatal Unit. In addition, Grady Health System operates the nation’s most comprehensive publicly funded center for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, the nation’s largest hospital-based ambulance service (over 70,000 calls annually) and one of the largest Poison Control Centers (over 90,000 calls annually). The Emory Healthcare System, which provides approximately 75% of the physician coverage for the Grady Health System, is one of the nation’s leading healthcare systems and is nationally recognized for expertise in cardiac, neurologic and specialty care. Dr. Haley serves on or chairs various hospital, university and national committees including the Board of Directors for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. He is a member of several national organizations including the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Haley is also an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is currently both a Fellow in the Woodruff Leadership Academy and a Fellow for the National Association of Public Hospital (NAPH) Program. |
