The Future of the Hospital Emergency Department
PanelistsTim A. Johns, M.D., F.A.C.E.P. is founder of the Gilbert Hospital. He joined the medical staff at Chandler Regional Hospital in 1984 and maintains his staff membership there. He served as the EMS Coordinator at Chandler Regional from 1989 – 2001, was elected as Chief of Staff at Chandler Regional in 2000, and served as Chief until 2002. From 1994 until 2002, Dr. Johns was the Medical Director of Chandler Regional’s Emergency Department. Dr. Johns was on staff at Banner Baywood from 2003-2005. Dr. Johns went to medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated in 1982. He did his Internship at Scottsdale Healthcare Family Practice Residency Program from 1982 – 1983 and also did a Family Practice Residency at Scottsdale Healthcare Family Practice Residency Program. He is Board certified in Emergency Medicine and Family practice.
Peggy Stemmler, M.D., M.B.A. received her bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her pediatric residency and chief residency at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Stemmler remained at CHOP, serving as both a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and as a pediatric consultant for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Office of Maternal and Child Health. There she cut her teeth on public health and health policy issues such as childhood lead poisoning, breastfeeding promotion, children with special health needs, and children's health insurance. Upon moving to Arizona, Dr. Stemmler practiced at the Maricopa County Medical Center as a general pediatrician for several years, and then joined Children’s Action Alliance, a child advocacy group, where she worked on health policy relating to children. After a brief hiatus to earn her MBA, she started Stemmler & Associates, a health policy research and analysis firm in May 2001. She is a board-certified pediatrician, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She currently serves as chair of the Arizona Asthma Coalition, President of the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and chairs the board of the Pediatric Foundation of Arizona. Her interests include access to healthcare, Medicaid, SCHIP, and barriers to enrollment in public benefits programs.
Todd B. Taylor, M.D., F.A.C.E.P. is Council Speaker for the American College of Emergency Physicians, Vice-President for Public Affairs for the Arizona College of Emergency Physicians and an Emergency Physician at Banner Good Samaritan in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Taylor received his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Mount Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and serves as a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. His many volunteer activities have afforded him the opportunity to gain experience in ED Crowding & Ambulance Diversion, EMTALA, Healthcare Legislative & Regulatory Advocacy, Healthcare Policy, Managed Care Issues, Emergency Medicine Management, Coding, & Billing, and many other issues facing emergency medicine & healthcare.
