Employee Costs* as a Percentage of Median Household Income, 2002–2010 (PEPM)
In 2002, the PEPM premium contribution and out-of-pocket expense for people with employer-sponsored insurance averaged about 8% of the median household income. In 2010, that percentage is expected to average over 10% of household income for people covered through a large employer, and over 12% of the median household income for small firm employees, whose annual wages are already generally below the median.
Notes:
Employee cost includes employee contribution to premiums and out-of-pocket expenses such as annual deductibles, co-payments, and coinsurance.
